What’s inspiring you this week? I was inspired by Create With Joy’s Inspire Me Monday an excellent way to participate in the blogging/creativity community. Learn more about it and get inspired!
I was inspired when I heard about this book series Anno Dracula by Kim Newman. Dracula has succeeded in conquering Great Britain as the King having married Queen Victoria. Normally that would not be enough to interest me but it seems the book is filled with characters from history and fiction of that time era. (Each book is set in a different era)
The book makes use of characters in the public domain (Sherlock Holmes, Van Helsing, Dr. Jekyll etc) but he also makes clever references to other characters from older movies and novels that are now not as well known.
His books were inspired by the World Newton Family a concept introduced by the writer Philip Jose Farmer whose crossover fiction often combined such literary characters as Solomon Kane, Tarzan, Allan Quartermain and the like. Being a fan of such crossover ideas like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen it really appeals to me.
It inspired me to develop a role playing game that would use older historical and fictional characters that we just don’t get to see as much anymore. The book is certainly worth checking out.
